A doctor at the police headquarters discovers him and brings him into Donlevy’s office to tell his story. When the police find the boyfriend, they think he is drunk and throw him in the tank. She thinks he is dead and Burr carries her away and steals the car. The boyfriend goes down and Wood comes over to see how he is doing. Burr hits the boyfriend with his lunch box. He goes to investigate and a scuffle ensues. They are discussing their future together when the boyfriend notices a man in the trees watching them. This story starts out with Wood and her boyfriend, played by Richard Anderson, up at “Lover’s Loop” parked in his car. Though the poster says the third star is Brian Donlevy, playing the detective in charge of the case, the real third star of this film is Raymond Burr playing a psychopath. Unfortunately, director Robin Spry, who directed this version of a Mary Higgins Clark book, has failed to convey Erich's dangerous behavior in a subtle manner. The magical, romantic atmosphere changes quickly in Canada: the caretaker's deranged wife, Reine (Annie Girardot), babbles about her missing daughter Erich, meanwhile, reveals an obsession with his dead mother and also vanishes to paint in middle of the night. She agrees to marry him, and moves with her two small daughters to Erich's Quebec estate. It's love at first sight for Erich, who feverishly woos Jenny. Jenny (Carol Higgins Clark), a New York art gallery manager and single mother, bumps into famous Canadian painter Erich Keough (Perry King). Inevitably, however, it collapses under the weight of its own silly plot. A CRY IN THE NIGHT, a horror film about a naive woman and her psychopath husband who turns against her, tells a frightening story.
